This year, 2011-2012, is the year of chemistry in the Lycée Français d’Irlande. As part of this years program, a few students from both St. Kilian’s and the LFI took part in the Women in Technology and Science’s (WITS) conference which took place on International Woman’s Day (1st March 2012). A few months ago, these students interviewed Professor Aoife McLysaght, one of the five women who work in the field of science and research who were chosen to be in a film by WITS representing these women. The other four women who appear in the short documentary, who spoke to the students were Dr. Merle Missoweit, Professor Dervilla Donelly, Professor Nicole Moreau and Lieutenant Niamh Ní Fhátharta. The conference was hosted by the European Parliament Office. The chairperson, Sadhbh McCarthy was the first to speak about how WITS is «inspiring futures» for girls in secondary schools who wish to pursue a career in the scientific sector. Then, the minister for research and innovation completed her speech by adding that «we need more women in science». The film was very inspiring, as well as interesting and original. Overall, we spent a very good afternoon. We met many incredible women and learnt more about women’s options for the future.
We would like to thank our physics and chemistry teacher, Mr. Marcelin, who initiated us to the program and who accompanied us to the conference.
